Initiatives: Women In Development organized a two days National Consultation on Women farmers and Collective Farming at India Habitat Center, New Delhi between 8 and 9th September in association with activists, networks, academicians, research scholars and individuals with an objective to address the issues of rural farming women.

Women who were long associated with women farmers and sustainable agriculture, organic scientists, academicians, eminent scholars and researchers, human rights lawyers gathered from various states of the country to emerge a strong movement of women farmers and evolved action oriented strategies to achieve the objectives.

Earlier Dr. Bina Agarwal, a renowned scholar; land rights activist, and the director of Institute of Economic Growth, University of Delhi, delivered the key note address on women farmers and their land rights, highlighting the existing legal provisions in India and the effective adoptable strategies to secure land rights for women.

Following this ‘Landing for Change’ a documentary film to promote women’s collective farming units that narrates IWID’s experiences in establishing collective farm model by a group of women in the state of Tamil Nadu was screened.

Later Ms. Sashi Sail, Founder member, Treasurer- National Alliance of Women (NAWO) and Dr. G. Nammalvar, distinguished organic scientist addressed on the Challenges and Opportunities of Women Farmers Associations and Organic and Sustainable Agriculture and Food security respectively in the panel discussion chaired by Dr. Pam Rajput., Executive Director, Women's Resource and Advocacy Centre.

Following this, discussions were held on the regional, geographical and cultural realities in terms of challenges and opportunities to promote collective farms. The discussions centered on the adoption of ‘Collective Farming by Women’ as the viable strategy to strengthen the collective power of women and to facilitate the attainment of their land rights. The strategies to be adopted in rain fed/dry lands, river belts/delta lands /hilly terrains were discussed and evolved with the understanding on traditional practices of land ownership in patrilineal, matrilineal or community owned. The cultivation patterns were taken into consideration since the shift cultivation of hilly terrains and mechanization heavily impacts women’s role in agricultural practices.

On the second day Dr. V. Rukmini Rao, President, Gramya Resource Centre shared her experience and studies on collective farming by women and highlighted on the challenges and opportunities of collective farming. Dr. Kerma Sarah Lyngdoh, Former Vice Chancellor, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, presented on land rights for women in matrilineal communities.

The National Consultation also analyzed the factors that negatively impact agriculture in India. The chemical intensive agricultural practices and market oriented production that damaged the land and affected food security significantly were thoroughly diagnosed.

The National Consultation affirmed the importance of inclusion of women perspective in policies as women’s voices are not reflected in policy making. The lobbying strategies with the State and influencing the schemes were discussed. The methods to strengthen and consolidate women farmers across the country were discussed and strategies were laid.

The Consultation set the following Goals,
- To promote collective farming models by women
- To mobilize and strengthen women farmers (women who contribute in farming sector with or without land)
- To facilitate the emergence of an self advocacy group of women farmers
- To promote Natural farming
- To promote food security based agriculture
- To lobby with government to influence policy and schemes to incorporate the above goals

To actualize the goals, ‘National Campaign for Women Farmers and Collective Farming’ was initiated under the collective leadership of women.

It was resolved unanimously that Dr. Pam Rajput, Executive Director, Women’s Resource and Advocacy centre who facilitated the consultation will be the facilitator of the National Campaign for Women Farmers and Collective Farming. Dr.Neelavalli, Director of IWID (Initiatives: Women in Development) who is the organizer of the National Consultation could function as the co-facilitator of the Campaign.
